Agreed billing power
Agreed billing power is the power level in kW that a customer agrees with the grid operator and pays for. Consumption above it is billed as excess power. SG Connect keeps grid draw below the agreed level automatically.

Backup power
Backup power means the home battery supplies the house when the grid fails. The house switches to battery power automatically and switches back when the grid returns.
Battery capacity (kWh)
Battery capacity is the amount of energy a battery can store, in kWh. Nominal capacity is the total; usable capacity is the part that can actually be used, after the reserve the manufacturer keeps to protect the cells.
Battery cycles and lifetime
A battery cycle is one full charge and discharge. LFP home batteries are rated for several thousand cycles, which is 10 years or more at one cycle per day. Warranties usually guarantee a share of capacity after a set number of years or cycles.
Battery power (kW)
Battery power is how fast a battery can charge or discharge, in kW. It limits how large a load the battery can cover and how quickly it can absorb solar surplus. A 5 kW battery cannot cover an 8 kW peak on its own.
Battery storage (home battery)
Battery storage stores electricity for later use. In a solar system it stores midday surplus for the evening, can charge from the grid in cheap hours, covers consumption peaks and can supply the house during an outage. A battery has a capacity in kWh (how much it stores) and a power in kW (how fast it charges and discharges).
Battery storage system (BESS)
A battery storage system (BESS) stores electricity — solar surplus or grid electricity from cheap hours — for use later: in expensive hours, during consumption peaks or during a grid outage.
Behind the meter
Behind the meter means everything on the customer's side of the electricity meter: solar panels, battery, inverter, EV charger and other loads. Energy is produced, stored and consumed there before it crosses the meter to the grid.
Beyond the meter
Beyond the meter is the grid side of the electricity meter: optimisation, electricity supply, the virtual power plant and the balancing markets.
BMS (battery management system)
The battery management system (BMS) is the electronics inside a battery that monitors each cell's voltage, current and temperature. It stops charging or discharging when limits are reached and balances the cells so they age evenly.

Day-ahead market
The day-ahead market is the wholesale electricity exchange where prices for each hour of the next day are set the day before.
DC-coupled and AC-coupled battery
A DC-coupled battery connects to the hybrid inverter on the DC side, together with the panels. An AC-coupled battery has its own inverter and connects on the AC side.
Depth of discharge (DoD) and state of charge (SoC)
Depth of discharge (DoD) is the share of a battery's capacity that is used in a cycle. State of charge (SoC) is how full the battery is at a given moment, in percent. A DoD limit of 90 percent means the battery never goes below 10 percent SoC.
Dynamic electricity prices
Dynamic electricity prices change every hour or every 15 minutes with the wholesale market. SG Connect charges the battery in cheap hours and covers consumption from the battery in expensive hours.

Energy management system (EMS)
An energy management system (EMS) is the software that connects the energy devices at a site — battery, generation, consumption — and controls them together. The aim is lower costs, lower peaks and more use of the site's own energy. SG Connect is NGEN's EMS.
Excess power
Excess power is consumption that exceeds the agreed billing power.
Export limitation (curtailment)
Export limitation means the inverter reduces or stops feeding electricity into the grid. It is applied when the grid operator requires it, when the connection cannot take the full power, or when market prices are negative. Production is used on site or stored.

Feed-in (export) and import
Feed-in, or export, is solar electricity the site sends to the grid when production exceeds consumption. Import is electricity taken from the grid. The supplier pays for exported energy at the price in the contract, which is usually lower than the import price.
Fix + Spot tariff
A Fix + Spot tariff combines a fixed price for part of the consumption with the market (spot) price for the rest.

Grid connection point
The grid connection point is where the building connects to the distribution grid, usually at the meter cabinet. Its size is set by the main fuse (for example 3 × 25 A) and defines the maximum power the site can draw from or feed into the grid.
Grid fees (network charges)
Grid fees are the part of the electricity bill paid for using the grid. They are separate from the energy price. They depend on agreed billing power, consumption peaks and the tariff block in which electricity is used. They can be lowered by controlling when and how much power a site draws.

Hybrid inverter
A hybrid inverter is an inverter with a battery connection. It converts the DC electricity from solar panels into the AC electricity used by the house and the grid. The inverter is rated in kW (maximum AC output). It has one or more MPPT inputs for strings.

Load shifting
Load shifting means moving the running time of flexible devices to cheaper hours. Smart or shiftable loads are devices whose running time can be moved without affecting comfort or output: EV chargers, heat pumps, air conditioning, water heaters, and in industry cooling, heating and compressed air. SG Connect runs them in cheap hours or during solar surplus.

Negative electricity prices
Negative electricity prices occur when generation on the exchange exceeds demand, usually at midday with high solar and wind output. Exporting electricity then costs money. SG Connect can limit or pause solar production in those hours.

Peak demand
Peak demand is the highest power a site draws from the grid at one time, measured in 15-minute intervals. A large part of grid fees is billed on peaks: the agreed billing power and every exceedance.
Peak shaving
Peak shaving means the battery supplies part of the load when consumption rises, so less power is drawn from the grid at once. Lower peaks mean lower grid fees, lower capacity charges and no excess power charges.

Self-consumption and self-sufficiency
Self-consumption is the share of own solar production used on site instead of exported. Self-sufficiency, shown in the SG Connect app as the Self-Powered share, is the share of consumption covered by own solar and battery instead of the grid.
Self-consumption rate
Self-consumption rate is the share of solar production used on site instead of exported. Without a battery it is typically 25 to 40 percent for a household; with a battery it can rise to 60 to 80 percent.
SG Brain
SG Brain is the optimisation module of SG Connect. It uses electricity prices, weather forecasts, battery state and the site's consumption history to plan when the battery charges and discharges. The plan covers the next 24 hours and is recalculated every 15 minutes.
SG Brain Savings
SG Brain Savings is a screen in the SG Connect app, released in July 2026. It shows in euros how much the battery with SG Brain has saved. It compares actual costs with the costs the same period would have had without a battery, using the user's real prices and grid fees.
SG Connect
SG Connect is NGEN's smart energy management platform. It connects a battery storage system, solar generation, the grid connection and consumption into one system that lowers electricity costs and grid fees automatically, for homes and for businesses.
SG Connect App
The SG Connect App is the mobile and web application for SG Connect systems. It shows solar production, battery status, consumption, savings, energy flows and electricity prices, refreshed every 2 seconds. Users set how the system behaves. Available for iOS and Android.
SG Connect for Business
SG Connect for Business is the energy management platform for commercial and industrial sites. It connects battery storage, on-site generation and controllable loads. It lowers peak demand and grid fees, buys energy in cheaper hours and can earn revenue from flexibility.
SG Connect for Home
SG Connect for Home is the household version of the SG Connect platform. It combines a home battery, a hybrid inverter and a smart control unit with the SG Connect app to lower a household's electricity bill and grid fees automatically.
Single-phase and three-phase connection
A single-phase connection has one live conductor at 230 V and is common in flats and small houses. A three-phase connection has three live conductors at 400 V and allows higher power. The inverter must match the connection: H1 series for single-phase, H3 series for three-phase.
Solar PV (photovoltaics)
Solar PV is the site's own generation. Without storage, a solar array exports its surplus at midday, when prices are lowest. With a battery and SG Connect the surplus is stored and used in the evening.
