Python Backend Engineer

06. October 2026
You will build and run the production backend services behind NGEN's trading and planning products, such as NGENEER, a platform that turns a customer's consumption data, local tariffs and market prices into an optimized battery-storage business case, and SG-Trader, our automated platform that trades battery-storage flexibility on European intraday power markets around the clock. Underneath them sits our shared data platform: integrations with external market-data sources, streaming pipelines, time-series storage and an internal data API that the rest of the company relies on. Everything runs on our own infrastructure, so you will care as much about how a service behaves in production, and how it fails, as about how it is written.

What you'll work on:

Your focus depends on which team you will join (see below). Typical work includes:

  • Owning features end to end: from a written plan, through API, domain logic and storage, to a production rollout.

  • Integrating with internal and external services, such as our internal data API, market-data providers, power exchanges and asset operators, and keeping our services correct when they fail: outages, timeouts, and late, duplicate or out-of-order data.

  • Building data integrations and streaming pipelines that feed our shared data platform, including backfills and safe reprocessing.

  • Designing and evolving the APIs that web frontends and other services build against.

  • Developing and maintaining shared, versioned Python libraries that other teams depend on.

  • Keeping services secure: authentication and authorization, secrets handling, least-privilege access and network isolation.

  • Keeping services resilient in production: observability, error handling, clean recovery after failures and restarts, safe migrations and rollouts.

  • Deploying and operating your services on Kubernetes through GitOps, together with the rest of the team.

  • Reviewing colleagues' work and documenting the decisions that shape the system.

What we expect from you:

  • Solid knowledge of Python (3.12+), clean code and automated testing.

  • Asynchronous Python (asyncio), ideally in production code.

  • At least 12 months of experience building backend services (ideally 5+ years), including services you helped run in production.

  • Understanding of how distributed systems fail and how to design for it: timeouts and retries, idempotency, concurrency and race conditions, and recovery to a consistent state.

  • Security fundamentals: OIDC/OAuth, secrets handling, least privilege and keeping sensitive data out of logs.

  • Deployment practices: Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and running services on Kubernetes or a similar platform.

  • Experience designing HTTP APIs, ideally with FastAPI and Pydantic.

  • Relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL, including schema design and migrations.

  • Daily work in a Linux environment.

  • Fluent Slovenian and a high level of English (spoken and written).

  • At least a level VI education (Slovenian classification) in computer science / informatics.

  • Category B driving licence.

You don't need to have mastered every technology listed above. If you have a solid grasp of resilient systems, security and deployment, we will help you grow into the rest.

Nice to have, but not required:

  • GitOps (Flux), secrets management with OpenBao or Vault, and OpenTelemetry.

  • Identity providers such as Keycloak.

  • Redis or other in-memory data stores.

  • Event streaming with Kafka or Redpanda and a schema registry.

  • Time-series data, for example TimescaleDB.

  • Trading systems: exchange connectivity, order lifecycle, position and risk management.

  • Energy markets, tariffs or battery storage.

  • AI-assisted development: working productively with coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor or Copilot agents, and keeping their output correct through plans, tests and careful review.

Tech stack:

Python 3.12+ · FastAPI · Pydantic · PostgreSQL / TimescaleDB · Redis · Redpanda (Kafka) · Keycloak · OpenTelemetry · Docker · Kubernetes · Flux (GitOps) · OpenBao · uv · ruff · pytest · Gitea Actions

We're hiring on two teams

This role is open on two teams, and we will discuss with you which fits you best. The Smart Trading team builds the services behind SG-Trader: connectivity to power exchanges and battery-storage operators, order and position management, risk controls, and the security and deployment of a system that runs in live markets. Experience with resilient systems, concurrency and trading is especially useful there.

The Python Backend team builds NGEN's shared data platform: data integrations, streaming pipelines, time-series storage, the internal data API, and the Python libraries other teams depend on. Experience with event streaming and time-series data is especially useful there.

What we offer:

  • permanent employment;

  • competitive compensation reflecting your knowledge and experience;

  • flexible working hours and hybrid work (after probation period);

  • a dynamic work environment with opportunities for professional development;

  • work on interesting and innovative projects;

  • direct involvement in the growth of an international company in one of the fastest-growing fields supporting society's green transition;

  • work within a highly skilled international team;

  • additional professional training;

  • work in modern, well-equipped facilities;

  • meals at our Manu restaurant;

  • free parking;

  • EV charging available.

We will enter into a permanent employment contract, incl. probation period, with the selected candidate.

Please submit your application by 20th October.
