NGEN enters Latvia with 100 MW / 200 MWh storage project

NGEN has entered the Latvian market through the acquisition of 100 percent of SIA "Liepāja ESS", backed by a €50 million investment. The project will deliver a 100 MW / 200 MWh standalone battery energy storage system at the Grobiņa substation in the Dienvidkurzeme region of southern Kurzeme, with commercial operations planned by the end of 2026.
It will be the first energy storage facility in the Baltics to use Tesla technology, and the first storage installation in Latvia integrated with the transmission grid.
Latvia is moving quickly on energy security and on preparing its grid for higher shares of renewable generation. Three conditions made the market attractive: orderly and predictable regulation, clearly stated energy ambitions, and an established understanding within the system that flexibility is infrastructure rather than an optional addition.
At transmission level, a system of this size performs a different function from distributed storage. It supports balancing across the Baltic system, helps absorb variable generation, and provides fast response capacity where the grid has limited alternatives. For a market where large-scale storage has been largely absent, the project also establishes a technical and regulatory reference for what follows.
The Latvian project is one of five financed under NGEN's €70 million facility from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, alongside systems in Poland, Romania and Slovenia.
