NGEN starts construction of 85 MW / 170 MWh storage in Austria

NGEN has started construction of an 85 MW / 170 MWh battery energy storage system in Wagenham, Upper Austria. It is the largest system-critical storage facility in the country and one of the largest in Europe. The project is developed by NGEN Austria, has been in preparation since 2023, and is scheduled to enter operation in 2026.
The facility is designed to support the integration of renewable generation into the electricity grid. By storing energy and providing flexible capacity, it will help balance fluctuations from wind and solar, contributing to grid stability and security of supply.
Location is central to the project. Upper Austria sits at a connection point toward Germany, on one of the more heavily used corridors in the Central European system. Storage placed at this point can relieve congestion and support cross-border flows, which is a different function from optimising a single site's consumption.
"Upper Austria lies at the heart of Europe. It is exactly here that we need high-performance storage solutions to drive the energy transition forward efficiently," said Matija Dolinar, Chief Commercial Officer of NGEN Group.
Wagenham follows NGEN's earlier Austrian projects in Arnoldstein and Fürstenfeld, and marks a step up in scale — roughly four times the capacity of the Arnoldstein-Gailitz facility inaugurated in October 2025. A 2025 study projects that Austria will require 8.7 GW of battery storage capacity by 2040 to accommodate renewable expansion and rising electricity demand.
NGEN Austria has been active in the country since 2021 and operates the two largest battery storage facilities currently in service there.
