Project Overview

NGEN's third battery and the second at Talum, commissioned during the 2022 energy crisis.

Talum 2 was formally opened on 27 October 2022 in the Talum business zone in Kidričevo, alongside Talum 1. The system has 20 MW of connected power and 40 MWh of storage capacity. At the time it was one of the largest battery storage systems in Europe.

Once Jesenice and Talum 1 were integrated into the Slovenian power system, NGEN set out to expand its battery network and began preparing the project at the end of 2021. Talum again offered the connection capacity and infrastructure it needed.

With Talum 2 in operation, NGEN's storage at the Kidričevo site reached 35 MW and 70 MWh.

The Challenge

The 2022 energy crisis raised the value of flexibility that can respond within seconds.

The energy crisis brought extreme price volatility and made imbalances costly for balance groups and large consumers alike.

Europe's power system still relied mainly on conventional generators to cover large deviations between generation and consumption. Batteries respond much faster and can adjust their output continuously, which suits the frequent small corrections that balancing requires.

Adding that flexibility quickly still depended on finding a connection point. Talum's closed distribution system made room for a second phase at the same site, connected at medium voltage alongside Talum 1.

The Solution

Tesla supplies the hardware; NGEN's software decides how the battery operates.

Talum 2 is a Tesla Megapack system inside Talum's closed distribution system. The hardware sets the physical limits: 20 MW for two hours. How that capacity is used is decided by NGEN's platform.

The platform dispatches Talum 2 with Talum 1, Jesenice and the rest of the portfolio. The battery supports frequency regulation in the Slovenian and European power system, reduces balance group imbalances and provides flexibility to other market participants, particularly large electricity consumers.

The battery is monitored around the clock from NGEN's control centre in Žirovnica.

Key Outcomes

What this project delivers.

One of Europe's largest at opening

At 20 MW and 40 MWh, Talum 2 was one of the largest battery storage systems in Europe when it opened in October 2022.

Frequency regulation and balancing

The battery supports frequency regulation and reduces balance group imbalances in the Slovenian system.

Flexibility for large consumers

Talum 2 provides flexibility to other market participants, particularly large electricity consumers.

35 MW at one site

Together, Talum 1 and Talum 2 give Kidričevo 35 MW and 70 MWh of storage, dispatched as part of one portfolio.
