Case study: how smart battery storage transformed energy management for a logistics company

17. August 2026
A logistics and freight forwarding company already had a 130 kWp solar power system installed at its site. Yet solar generation alone was not enough to optimize its energy costs.

The company faced three key challenges: high peak demand, surplus solar energy exported to the grid at low prices, and significant electricity consumption during high-price periods.

Adding battery storage to an existing solar system

Instead of changing the existing PV installation, the company upgraded its energy system with two NGEN G-MAX battery energy storage systems, providing a total capacity of 200 kW / 400 kWh.

The AC-coupled solution is managed automatically by SG Brain, NGEN’s intelligent energy management system, while SG Connect provides monitoring and control.

The goal was not simply to store solar energy. The battery combines several optimization strategies: increasing solar self-consumption, electricity price arbitrage and peak shaving.

Intelligent optimization every 15 minutes

SG Brain does not operate according to a fixed daily schedule. Every 15 minutes, it calculates a new optimal battery strategy based on expected electricity consumption and solar production, electricity market prices and the defined grid import limit.

G-MAX then automatically adjusts charging and discharging to minimize energy costs and maximize the value of available energy.

The results

The impact was significant. Peak demand during tariff block 1 was reduced by 69%, from 49 kW to 15 kW, while grid capacity costs fell by approximately 50%.

The battery also stored 52.8% of annual solar production that would otherwise have been exported to the grid, making it available for later on-site consumption.

By strategically exporting surplus energy during periods of higher electricity prices, revenue from exported energy increased by approximately 485%.

Overall, the solution achieved an estimated payback period of six years. These calculations do not include potential additional revenues from balancing markets such as aFRR and mFRR.

More than energy storage

This case demonstrates that the value of commercial battery storage goes beyond storing surplus solar energy.

By combining battery storage, smart energy management, price arbitrage and peak shaving, businesses can turn an existing solar installation into a more flexible and economically efficient energy system.

With NGEN G-MAX, SG Brain and SG Connect, energy is not simply stored – it is actively managed to create greater value.

justCHARGE: how NGEN manages electric vehicle charging

A charging station is hardware. Access control, pricing, billing and operational monitoring all sit in the software layer above it. justCHARGE is the platform that covers that layer.
